Oil Spill Photo Gallery: Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Part 2

Categories:
The oiled wildlife rehabilitation center in Fort Jackson, La., is the recipient of all birds, and occasionally other creatures, affected by the spill. It serves as an animal MASH until that cleans and cares for the creatures until they are well enough to be released.  More info can be found at tristatebird.org and IBRRC.org.

Thank You

You're work is amazing, like so many people my heart loves the beauty of the natural wonders of wildlife and like so many my heart breaks when man made errors cause so much distress or death to these beautiful wonders of the world. Thank you for your dedication. This year for father's day the Dad's in my family will be receiving an adopted bird from the IBRRC site and know they will appreciate this gift more then anything else they could receive. For birthday's and Christmas also each will be receiving an adopted bird and hoping I receive the same from family members.

One of my son's in highschool decided two years ago he wanted to build a career in the wildlife conservation. He is so good with animals whether domestic or wild and both domestic or wild seem to gravitate to him sensing his very soft heart and personality. When he saw the pictures of the wildlife effected from the oil spill tears weld in his eyes and wanted more then anything esp after seeing the pictures of IBRRC helping these animals to be involved in wildlife conservation after highschool and into college.

Again thank you for your dedication in saving these helpless animals, I could only imagine how many hours you put in during a crisis like this and how much your heart must break every time you witness yet another being displaced. Many wishes and blessings to you all

you people are the best!

you people are the best! never stop doing what you do.

This is wonderful!

I know there have been articles posted that oiled birds should be euthanized. After these pictures, I do not agree. What all of you are doing brings hope, love and compassion from the rest of the world. Thank you for your dedication and love for all creatures big and small:)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

thank for everything you do ,day in and day out.I f ind it amazing what terrific wok u do.I was going to go on vacation this year, but this catastrophe changed my ming and i was wondering if you knew where I could register to help you guys, and help the beautiful, innocent birda, fish and mammals...

God bless yoU!

God bless you and all you are doing for the wildlife!~

Thank you so much

You guys are my heroes!

Angels!

If these magnificent animals could speak they would say you are all their angels. No words can express how grateful we are that you are there helping them. Bless, bless you all.

Fantastic Work!

I know a lot of us are frustrated we cannot help out all of the affected animals down in the Gulf, but seeing you guys doing this good work makes it all a little more bearable. Thank you for everything, I'm glad the experts can do what all of us wish we could.

I'm retired with loads of

I'm retired with loads of time...Wish I could be there to help too. Its
-frustrating- to watch all the films and news and see the sorry mess BP has created, along with the pain and suffering the wildlife must endure.
Thanks for all you are doing to help save what animals you can.

Helping out

Is there anythig regular (not trained for wildlife handling) can do on the ground? A group of us can pay our way, and want to help in the efforts out there. Is there a to volunteer directly through one of the wildlife org.'s?

Thank you

I appreciate everything you all are doing. Thank you.

Ideas and suggestions

Since the disaster started I have been overwhelmed with ideas, good and bad about things to do to try to help the wildlife. My heart aches every day and every time I think about the oil.

I have called and emailed several agencies, including BP herself, and tried the white house but you know how that goes....but I think I have some good ideas and I want someone to hear them to quell my sense of hopelessness and maybe make a difference. Things like organizing state wide cleaning teams to compete during the summer and fall to see how many birds they can clean and how many turtles they can save or how many miles of beach they can clean....and have it witnessed, and you know how America loves competition....but the end of Fall, we might have some improved circumstances down there and it is needed. The winning state could get some prizes or a statue of some sort....who knows...but what a difference.

We have millions of kids getting out of school to sit on the couch , unemployed, and smoke dope or watch TV....why not get them engaged in volunteer work to do some Good and get exercise too.

Why is public broadcasting or all of the tv network not broadcasting where to send money or go to volunteer time.
I am on a team from my college that has applied for a few grand in grant funds to bring ten students down who care about ecology and who want to do service /volunteer work for the experience.

This is a life changing opportunity for youth, and a crisis for the animals, so why not make it happen. Audubon can help by finding places for volunteers to stay.

I live on the Westbank of

I live on the Westbank of Louisiana, and I want so badly to do something to help. I feel useless and helpless just sitting back and watching what is going on in the Gulf, specifically with the wildlife. What you all are doing is incredible; you are all true Angels sent from God. I want to help in some form or fashion, so is there somewhere that you could direct me to allow me to extend my services?

agreed

This is an absolutely excellent idea! The government and schools need to push teens and college students to volunteer their time and get involved. Perhaps get some pro bono work from one of the large ad agencies to setup a campaign targeting the 18-25 demographic, imploring them to take time from their summer vacation to go down and try and help where they can in the affected areas..

How can i help?

Is there anything that a willing volunteer can do to help you at the Center? I live near Lafayette and can travel.

Go to www.audubonaction.org and fill out the form. They will most certainly email you with several different kinds of opportunities.

Save the Wildlife due to the BP Disaster

I think that everybody involved in the clean up to help the animals should be recognized because of thier hard work.I sure hope that most of the world will BOYCOTT BP after this mess that they have created. Someone has to be accountable to this disaster, and the clean up mess. Washington sure isnt doing much to help. they dont even answer the emails that I sent to them.

Don't boycott BP--boycott oil

With so much sadness in the news, stories like this are so important...to see what is being done to help the wildlife. The one thing that gives me hope is how overwhelmingly people seem to feel for the wildlife, maybe there is hope for change in the future. But, to respond to an earlier comment, boycotting BP will not change a thing if we continue to use oil at the rate we do. BP has a terrible safety record, and is the one behind THIS spill, but it's our huge demand for oil that causes the problem. The Guardian UK recently had a good article about how Shell Oil is responsible for equally (if not more) environmental devastation in the Niger Delta in Africa...and I just read an article about another leaking rig in the Gulf of Mexico (not owned by BP). We need to rethink our consumption of oil, and as soon as we can (I'm doing this myself, haven't gotten in my car in a week).

Please somoene answer this blog and tell us how to help,

I have been calling for weeks of where I can go to help. IM not wildlife trained but in these drastic measures who cares. I have saved some money and am willing to come down and chase birds. I will board myself and have a car.
Where do i go ? Who do I call.
I cant sit here and watch these images.
You need some young people out there who can run and chase those birds

training

Is there a place in Missouri I could get whatever training that would let me be a desirable volunteer. Please don't say vet school.

We care

As an owner of several RES turtles, I feel so sad for the ones that got hurt. Thank you for everything you have done for them.

Lets do something about it not just watch it on TV

Dear readers on this blog.
I am getting myself a one way ticket and some money and am heading down. I bought some hazmat clothing and cloves. Will rent a fisher boat for 70$ I contacted a few people and will go and search for oil covered birds. What are they gonna do arrest me ? I have been turned down by every single state agency because I am not wildlife certified. I cant wait any longer. I encourage all of you to take action !
If anyone has ideas or success in talking to someone please post it here. Thanks

While I have no advice, I

While I have no advice, I can wholeheartedly relate to your frustration and call to action. I hope you update us on your progress and findings.

I will update as soon as I get there

I am aware of the stress that is caused, but with the oil continuing to pour out I have no choice but to go. Its day 5 now, no one has gotten back to me except BEAKS from jacksonville. Everyone has been turning me away, therefore I am getting my camera and heading south next week.
I will keep the readers here posted to the progress.
Thanks
Rudy

Please be sure that what you

Please be sure that what you do does not cause more harm to the birds and other wildlife-- they are already incredibly stressed due to the oil spill. Improper handling and treatment could be the thing that pushes them over the edge.

I will be

IM only planning to rent a fisher boat for 70$ and just fish out birds from the water that are immobile and bring them ashore to TriState bird rescue. That way the stress will be less ( as opposed to chasing them on the beach )
Thanks for the advice !

Wildlife Rehabilitation Training

Carole
Is there any wildlife rehabilitation training anywhere in the US?

Laundered Birds

I understand that the birds are stessed in captivity, but when they are released, where do they go? Back to the oiled waters for food? I hope someone knows this answer.

Laundered Birds

They are released in Florida and hopefully do not try to get back home.

how can we help out

My 9 year old daughter and I live in central Illinois and we have nothing but some time on our hands this summer. I wanted to take her down to the coast to help out with the efforts being made with the wildlife and this horrible oil spill, however, I can't find a contact or a resource person. We are willing to travel and will put ourselves up. She has volunteered with wildlife rescue here in central Illinois for about 3 years now. We just can't seem to find a person that will give us any information on where to go and what to do. I keep hearing that I have to have some wildlife training, but I don't think there is time for that. I went on the Audobon website, but there was nothing there that would let me contact someone to volunteer. I cant believe that this is so difficult .... does anyone know how I can contact someone that will allow us to give of our time?

volunteers from central Illinios

I am making plans to head south July 1st to help save wildlife. My name is William Van Scott Nelson, you can contact me on Facebook.

Go to the Audubon society

Go to the Audubon society website and click the link for volunteers. There is a form on there website that you can fill out to apply to volunteer. They have plenty of volunteers from the local area - people who do not need housing. There are no hotels or motels near the areas of animal rehab. These area are rural with few accommodations. You will find that they are are using certified wildlife rehab people only for the bird cleaning duties. They have opportunities in helping with transport but again they have plenty of local volunteers.

Artists for Gulf Coast Wildlife

I am organizing a silent auction of artists works at my local community arts center. Many artists are very happy to donate their work. We are still working on the details of this event. Money acquired from the sold art work will be sent to the national Audubon society. I wanted to volunteer, also. But it seems that is not possible. Organizing the art auction is a good way to not feel powerless!! Thanks!

Artists for Gulf Coast Wildlife

Yes. I would like more detailed information on this auction you are planning.
Thank you.

From all of us who cant be

From all of us who cant be there, to all of you who are.....
Thank you so much for everything you are doing. I have a parrot and everytime I see pictures of these birds it hits me right in the gut. There are so many words to describe it, yet none of them are adequate. Thanks for all the love and dedication it is taking and bless you all! You are doing a wonderful thing.....

Its sad

i am absolutely angered by the fact that there isnt anymore funding from BP to assist in all of the cleaning of these animals.

How can i help

as someone mentioned before. i want to help. this is an absollute catastrophe. i am feeling helpless in texas goody3shoe456 @ yahoo.com

How can we donate cash to

How can we donate cash to fund this cleaning effort for the birds? I live too far away to volunteer so would like to help financially. I am sure many others would too if we knew where to send the funds.
