Bird Madness: Soaring Sixteen #6

Categories:

Well, no contest here, apparently. The cattle egret won the Soaring Sixteen round 5 hands down. Thanks for all your votes!

Now it’s on to Round 6 (just two more to go in our Soaring Sixteen after this). Today, we offer you two beautiful birds in shades of red: a red-shafted flicker and a northern cardinal. This one could be tough!

Voting for this round ends Sunday night, December 9, 2012.

Wondering what’s going on? From mid-November 2012 until early January 2013, we’re pitting some of the entries from this year’s Photo Awards (selected in no particular order) against one another. Then you get to vote. We’ll feature the winner on our website, along with an article about how she or he captured the shot.

In our January-February 2013 issue, we’ll also feature the official winners of the awards, selected by our panel of judges.

Red Shafted Flicker

The cardinal is one of my favorite birds and it is truly an awesome capture. However, the Red Shafted Flicker has a lot going on with its plumage. There is a riot of colors and patterns of course my favorite the almost clown face red lipstick mark around the face makes you want to say "Why so glum?"
