Bird-A-Day Challenge, Week 3

“That was the thing about Levantin: He loved the birds, but he really loved the places they brought him. When you spend your career in the confines of a gray suit, the pipits at dawn above timberline are even more wondrous,” wrote Mark Obmascik, author of The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession.
I am not obsessed—not even a little. But I get what Obmascik was saying. For some birders those little feathered creatures fluttering in the bushes are a tick in their notebooks. For others, they are a reason to take in the spectacles that most of us miss.
If it weren’t for giving this Bird-a-Day Challenge a go again this year, I might have missed the starry sky on the night when we were hooting in the dark, waiting for a barred owl to return the call: “Who Cooks for You, Who Cooks for You All?”
Maybe cleaning the house would have trumped enjoying that freakishly warm Sunday in January when people were flying kites instead of building snowmen. There I was in the midst of them, wrangling a toddler and a big dog as my husband and I took turns peering through a spotting scope at the far water where a gannet was feeding.
For me, that’s what it’s all about. The birds are beautiful, and I enjoy seeing them. Best of all, I enjoy what I see because of them.

I'm new to this page so I
I'm new to this page so I hope I get this right - I recently spent about two hours at a pond near us and was transported into bird world by thousands of water fowl and a bald eagle or two! Among the thousands of mallards, Northern Pintails and Common Goldeneyes, there were a few prizes (not that just being surrounded by whistles, honks (Can. geese) and hoots wasn't prize enough)
Bufflehead (two pairs that I could find) and a pair of Harlequin Ducks.
If you are looking for a bird for your list above then I can add Northern Flicker.

It’s alleged
It’s alleged “Bird-A-Day.” The objective: Count how abounding canicule in a row you can acquisition a “new” bird. (New = recorded for the aboriginal time in this game.) The rule: You have to never echo a species, nor go a day after seeing a new one. If you do, you are out of the challenge.

My usual flock of 200 or so
My usual flock of 200 or so goldfinch plus all the other birds of lessor numbers have totally disappeared the last few days. Made me think of the timing of the solar flares. Seemed to be a connection. A few birds are back this morning but I see that another large flare has erupted this morning as well. I will be watching over the rest of the week. I have seen this happen before I will go back and check my lack of birds against the timing of the flares.mensagens de amizade
